Andy Burmon
Andrew Burmon is a multiple Webby-winning editor, Peabody-nominated producer, adept marketer, serial entrepreneur, newly minted GQ columnist (recent article here), and staunch member of the upper-middle class. Prior to founding UPPER MIDDLE last year, Andrew served as the Editor-in-Chief of SPY, Fatherly, and Inverse. Earlier in his career he worked as staffer at Men’s Journal, Maxim, The Huffington Post, and an anti-authoritarian newspaper (now shuttered) in Cambodia. When I asked him for personal details, he told me that he lives in Brooklyn with his 19-month-old son, his 468-month-old wife, and a baby grand piano. He added that they’re raising the piano Jewish.
HOW TO BE UPPER MIDDLE CLASS (Illustrated Nonfiction, Forthcoming: Union Square - Hachette)
Who is upper-middle class? Are you? Am I? Is that guy over there in the Cybertruck? Why does it matter? HBTUMC unpacks what it means to be part of America’s vibe-based elite, speaking directly to the status anxieties of white-collar Millennials economically underperforming their own expectations. An unapologetic expression of professional managerial class solidarity, HBTUMC makes the case that Costocrats and gentlemen of athleisure represent America’s last bulwark against social decay and creeping oligarchy.
Targeting the growing audience of “semi-rich,” Great Recession-scarred millennials, HTBUMC uses works of social theory discarded by Boomers and original data from Upper Middle Research, the survey platform UPPER MIDDLE operates with partners like Bain and McKinsey, to create a composite portrait of precarious privilege. Cut through unexpected findings, forgotten history, and context, context, context, HTBUMC is filled with the kinds of insights that teach readers about themselves and give them something to say at dinner parties.
